When you include a gift to Global Ties U.S. in your long-term planning, you help to sustain citizen diplomacy. Your gift underpins our mission to power individuals, communities, and nations to build trust and advance peace and prosperity through international exchange.  

Gifts may take the form of bequests, charitable trusts, beneficiary designations, or other mechanisms. A bequest can be made for a specific amount, for a percentage of your estate, or for all or a portion of the remaining balance of an estate after the will or trust has given away each of the specific bequests. 

Below are some ways to create a legacy with Global Ties U.S.: 

• An unrestricted bequest allows Global Ties U.S. to use the funds to meet our most pressing needs. Unrestricted gifts are valuable as they provide flexible funds that can help address critical needs or emerging priorities that would not otherwise be funded.  

• A restricted bequest designates assets for a specific program, such as the Emerging Leaders Program, or for a specific purpose (for example, to provide stipends for Global Ties U.S. interns or to support advocacy activities). Note: donors who wish to make a restricted bequest are encouraged to contact us to ensure the purpose of your gift is understood. Restricted gifts help sustain the work that is most meaningful to you.  

• An endowed fund provides income every year in perpetuity to carry out the designated purpose of the fund. A fund can carry your name or the name of someone you wish to honor.   

The Gold Star Legacy Circle, established in 2007, recognizes and honors individuals who have made a lasting impact by remembering Global Ties U.S. in their will, trust, retirement plan, and other planned gift. By taking this step, these individuals help to sustain the work of Global Ties U.S. to support citizen diplomacy and international exchange for years to come.  

Members of the Gold Star Legacy Circle who have granted permission to list their names are recognized in the Global Ties U.S. Annual Report and in the Legacy of Citizen Diplomacy exhibit, a (forthcoming) special installation at the Global Ties U.S. office that pays tribute to the rich history of citizen diplomacy with a rotating display of archival materials, photographs, documents, and other artifacts.  

All members are invited to join periodic dinners and other events. 

To join the Gold Star Legacy Circle, please notify us in writing of your intended bequest or other planned gift (of any amount). Requests for anonymity will be honored.   

To make a bequest or other estate gift, you must sign a new will or living trust instrument, or add a codicil to your present will. The sample language below is provided to assist you in preparing your bequest.  

Simple bequest gift:  

I give and devise to Global Ties U.S. (Tax ID #52-0848094), located in Washington, DC, the sum of $___________ to be used for its general support [or for the support of a specific program or purpose]. 

Percentage gift:  

I give and devise to Global Ties U.S. (Tax ID #52-0848094), located in Washington, DC, ____% of my total estate to be used for general support [or for the support of a specific program or purpose]. 

Residual gift:  

I give and devise to Global Ties U.S. (Tax ID #52-0848094), located in Washington, DC, __% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support [or for the support of a specific program or purpose]. 

A qualified charitable distribution, or QCD, is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity. Donors who are over 70 ½ years of age may use QCDs to satisfy all or part of their required minimum distribution. 

Looking to give through your Thrift Savings Plan? QCDs can only be made from an IRA. To donate retirement assets in a TSP, 401(k) or other vehicles, you must first roll those funds over into a qualified IRA. To donate to Global Ties U.S. from your IRA, instruct the custodian of your IRA to make a distribution directly to Global Ties U.S. (your IRA custodians may send the QCD check directly to Global Ties U.S., or send you a check made payable to Global Ties U.S.). A Donor-Advised Fund is a charitable giving account that provides an immediate tax benefit and makes it easy to support Global Ties U.S. and other nonprofit organizations. The DAF Direct form provides a free, convenient way to initiate a grant recommendation through Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or BNY Mellon Charitable.

Simply select the institution that manages your donor-advised fund, enter the dollar amount you wish to grant to Global Ties U.S., and click “next.” You will be directed to your financial institution to complete your transaction.
